After my diagnosis, I quickly turned to Amazon for the best books to help me understand how I could strengthen my body and defeat cancer. I found the book "Anti Cancer- A new way of life" by David Servan-Schreiber, MD and PHD. An international bestseller and so incredible! I have used the principles in the book over the 7 months as my guide.
The tag line on the book says, "All of us have cancer cells in our bodies but not all of us will develop cancer." So powerful, right? The book is for those that want to prevent cancer and those that have it, to stay healthy. The author is a scientist and doctor and was diagnosed with brain cancer, twice. After his diagnosis he was on a mission to uncover what the body needs to be healthy to prevent cancer. A must read for everyone!
Knowledge is Power: My favorite teachings
1. Stress adds fuel to the fire, hormones released when the body is stressed produces fertilizer for cancer cells. How you manage the stress is most important.
2. Cancer is more widespread in the West and has been increasing since 1940. Three major factors: (1) large quantities of refined sugar in our diet (2) changes in method of farming (3) exposure to chemical products.
3. Cancer feeds on sugar. Peaks of insulin and the secretion of IGF stimulate the growth of cancer cells and their capacity to invade neighboring tissue. Sugar nourishes tissues and makes them grow faster. Insulin and IGF promote inflammation which is a fertilizer for tumors.
4. People with diabetes are known to be above average risk for cancer.
5. You want to avoid candies and snacks between meals (only whole foods as snacks)- when consumed there is nothing to block a rise in insulin.
6. Obesity is one of the highest risk for cancer.
7. rBGH (hormone injected into dairy cows) stimulates the growth of cancer cells in humans. You should only consume organic milk. I think Horizon tastes the best.
8. The risk of breast cancer almost doubles for women who have high levels of trans fats.
9. When PVC plastic is heated it diffuses BPA. BPA is harmful to us. Be careful of canned foods containing BPA.
10. Advises people with cancer or those that don't want it to be careful with cell phone use.
11. Cancer lies dormant in all of us. Our bodies make defective cells all the time. That is how tumors are born. But our bodies are also equipped with a number of defense mechanisms that detect and keep such cells in check. In the West, 1 in 4 will die of cancer but 3 in 4 will not.
What I love most about the book is it goes into great detail about what foods are best to cut back on to reduce cancer promoters and what foods will help defend the body. I have compared the information in the Anti Cancer against many other popular health books and for myself, I prefer the Anti Cancer. Although, most all have the same information, they all agree on what to do differently in the diet. The one thing not agreed on is consumption of meat/dairy. I choose to continue to eat meat in moderation and I consume dairy a lot. Two things I choose not to give up, unless my doctors tell me that I need to.
